Hickman, will be a featured speaker at the upcoming HNF CMT Summit + Health & Wellness Retreat 2026 in Ellicott City, Maryland. Hosted by the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation (HNF), this event brings together global leaders from academia, industry, clinical practice, and the patient community to explore the latest research and advancements in Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease.
Presentation – Research Track: AI & Technology Advances in CMT
The integration of artificial intelligence and microphysiological systems (such as our Human-on-a-Chip® single and multi-organ platform) are becoming a critical bridge for translational success in rare diseases, including CMT. In this talk, Dr. Hickman will discuss how these technologies will continue to benefit research and therapeutic development in this and other rare disease arenas.
Highlights attendees can expect to explore include:
- How artificial intelligence and cutting-edge, human-relevant in vitro technologies are accelerating drug discovery and target identification for CMT and other rare diseases.
- The role Hesperos’ serum-free, multi-organ platforms have played modeling complex neuropathies and supporting therapeutic development, including an example utilizing sera from an individual patient with CMT2A to evaluate efficacy of a potential therapeutic gaining an Orphan Drug Designation (See March 2025 Announcement).
About the Speaker
James J. Hickman, Ph.D., is the Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of Hesperos, Inc. He is also the Founding Director of the NanoScience Technology Center at the University of Central Florida. A pioneer in the field, Dr. Hickman has spent over 30 years developing functional in vitro systems. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the National Academy of Inventors, and is the President of the International Microphysiological Systems Society (IMPSS).
